چکیده

Mixed sediment beaches are morphologically distinct from and more complex than either sand or gravel only beaches. Three digital imaging techniques are employed to quantify surficial grain size and bedload sediment transport rates along the mixed sediment beaches of Kachemak Bay, Alaska. Applying digital imaging procedures originally developed for quickly and efficiently quantifying grain sizes of sand to coarse sediment classes gives promising results. Hundreds of grain size estimates lead to a quantitative characterization of the region’s sediment at a significant reduction in cost and time as compared to traditional techniques. Both the sand and coarse fractions on this megatidal beach mobilize into self-organized bedforms that migrate alongshore with a seasonality reflecting the temporal pattern of the alongshore component of wave power. In contrast, the gravel bedforms also migrate in the cross-shore without significant seasonality suggesting that swash asymmetry is sufficient to mobilize the gravel even during low energy summer conditions.

Hydrocarbon sources in Kachemak Bay Sediments: Improved Discrimination by Specific Compound δC Measurements

Identification of sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in sediments is an important step in reducing anthropogenic contamination. Identifications based solely on the composition of PAH can be confounded by compositional changes during weathering and biodegradation. Stable isotopic composition of individual PAH offers an additional marker, which can aid in distinguishing sources and...

Patterns in sea otter resource selection in Kachemak Bay, Alaska

Sea otters (Enhydra lutris) are known to forage extensively in both rocky and soft-bottom habitats throughout their range in Alaska. Their ability to significantly reduce prey abundance, limit prey size, and consequently alter community structure has been well documented. Much of this research, however, has focused on sea otter interactions with rocky habitats and associated epifaunal invertebr...

Discovery of 100–160-Year-Old Iceberg Gouges and Their Relation to Halibut Habitat in Glacier Bay, Alaska

—Side-scan sonar and multibeam imagery of Glacier Bay, Alaska, revealed complex iceberg gouge patterns at water depths to 135 m on the floor of Whidbey Passage and south to the bay entrance. These previously undiscovered gouges likely formed more than 100 years ago as the glacier retreated rapidly up Glacier Bay. Gouged areas free of fine sediment supported greater biodiversity of Pacific halib...
